Mission

Mech TowerThe mission of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is to prepare leaders educated in civil and environmental engineering to deal with present and future societal problems with emphasis on environmental engineering, hydrology and water resources, structural engineering and mechanics, and urban infrastructure and management. CEE is responsible for preparing students to deal with the major engineering challenges of the future in a sustainable manner and to assess the impacts of engineering decisions under uncertainty in pressing global, ethical, and societal contexts. More specifically, we seek:
•    To educate undergraduate and professional master students across the entire campus in a science and technology-based curriculum in civil and environmental engineering, and provide relevant service and research experiences.
•    To sustain highly selective graduate (MS and Ph.D.) programs of collaborative and distinguished scholarly education, research and practice.
•    To contribute locally, nationally, and internationally to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and the enhancement of quality of life through scholarly research and service; to apply this research in collaboration with industry and government; and to educate, advise, and help develop science policy at the local, national, and international levels.

Vision

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will enhance the sustainability of urban systems and energy and water infrastructure that are challenged by rapid change and/or extreme events, including increased demand from growing population, aging and deterioration, and climate variability-related disasters. These critical and emerging challenges will be addressed through technological innovation to improve infrastructure resilience and the efficiency of water and energy use; integration of complex system analysis to enhance risk assessment and mitigation; multidisciplinary solutions to improve quality of life and the value of investments in infrastructure; and educational efforts that promote sustainability, eco-responsible design and green engineering.
