CEE Dept

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Rice University represents the oldest of the 16 major recognized "disciplines" of engineering, and is comprised of a broad range of specialty areas.  These areas address urban systems, including infrastructure, risks and disasters, and sustainability. CEE at Rice University provides four undergraduate education foci: (1) Environmental engineering, (2) Hydrology and water resources, (3) Structural engineering and mechanics, and (4) Urban infrastructure and management. We perform vital research in all of the above areas with funding from NSF, EPA, DOE, City of Houston, State of Texas, and many others.

The mission of CEE is to prepare leaders educated in civil and environmental engineering to deal with present and future societal problems.  CEE provides a strong background in physical, chemical and biological, as well as socio-economic systems that affect engineering research and practice. To prepare students for an increasingly global workplace, CEE provides opportunities for international service learning experiences focusing on complex engineering problems that occur in diverse cultural and social situations. For example, Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a nationally recognized student-run organization, works on bringing sustainable technologies to developing regions of the world such as Central and South America.  Our formal internship program places students in companies throughout Houston and the U.S. Our graduates have enjoyed an excellent job market for decades, and can expect to be hired in areas such as engineering consulting, government, regulatory agencies, industry, and academia.
