Brief Bio

Dr. Shahsavari’s research focuses on developing a multi-scale, multi-paradigm materials modeling approach extending from the quantum level to the continuum level to study key functional behavior of complex materials, which are critical to the infrastructure underlying the science and technology enterprises of our society. Dr. Shahsavari has developed a broad foundation of knowledge and experience in engineering, mechanics, materials, and modelings. Prior to joining Rice University, he completed his Ph.D at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. Prior to MIT, he was a project engineer for a Canadian Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management firm in Alberta, where he advised large oil and gas companies.

Dr. Shahsavari has published several papers in the pioneer journals in the field of mechanics and materials and has given numerous lectures and talks at national and international conferences. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards in both academia and entrepreneurship including three-year fellowship from the National Research Council of Canada (NSERC), MIT $100,000 Grand Prize in Entrepreneurship Contest, Silver Medal in Material Research Society, Stephen Brunauer award for the best paper in the American Ceramic Society, etc. He is an associate member of American Concrete Institute (ACI Technical Committee Material Science of Concrete) and American Ceramic Society, and a member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Advances in Cement Based Materials (ACBM), and International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE).
