Life in the 21st century does not come without challenges. Natural disasters, aging infrastructure, and climate change produce very real problems for people the world over. As scientists, we study these issues to improve our knowledge and understanding. As engineers, we design and implement solutions that work in real-time. As always, we believe those solutions must start with education.Â
Our graduate and undergraduate academic programs are designed to give students a strong understanding of biological, chemical, physical, economic and social systems that affect engineering research and practice. We equip students with the knowledge to tackle todayâ€™s issues head-on.
Our faculty rank among the top 10 most productive in the United States* among all civil engineering and all environmental engineering Ph.D. programs, as shown by the number of publications and accolades attributed to them, as well as the amount of funding they receive. In turn, they inspire productive, happy students â€“ some ofÂ theÂ happiest in the nation, according to the Princeton Review.
Research opportunities abound in our department. Our graduate and undergraduate students work closely with faculty, performing experiments in state-of-the-art laboratories, developing and implementing novel computational techniques, and traveling nationally and internationally to perform in situ fieldwork in order to address the most critical challenges of our time.
We believe our students are future leaders in the field, catalysts for advancing our world. As such, we ensure that students have opportunities to broaden their academic experience â€“ and their skillset â€“ through international service learning that allows students to focus on complex engineering problems occurring in diverse cultural and social situations.
We actively teach new, interdisciplinary approaches made possible by novel developments in technology â€“ and then expect students to apply that education to novel solutions. At Rice, students are taught that they can affect how the future unfolds â€“Â they just need to be bold.Â
